It’s unusual to find two businesses who both have the same needs when it comes to their computers. In fact, we often find that individual businesses often have several different hardware needs within their company. However, no matter how big or small your business, business class hardware is a better option than consumer grade.
Business Class Vs. Consumer Grade Hardware
Although you may at first think that a computer you purchase from a big box store and from a managed service provider or the manufacturer are the same. However, they have many differences.
- Business class hardware is available in custom configurations.
- Most business laptops are compatible with docking stations.
- Business class PCs and laptops are built to withstand regular daily use for 8 hours or more.
- Consumer grade hardware generally has a one-year warranty vs. a business class’s three-year.
- Consumer grade hardware often comes pre-loaded with demo products and games not desirable for businesses.
- Consumer grade PCs and laptops are cheaper because they have limited options.
Manufacturer Warranty & Technical Support
Business class hardware, whether it’s a PC, laptop, router, docking station, or something else, needs strong warranties. You may also need professional manufacturer support. Business class machines have processors compatible with remote management. If you have remote workers or utilize a managed service provider for your IT support, they will likely need a machine that supports remote management.
Hardware Leasing
If your business is looking into the tax advantages that hardware leasing can provide, you may find that the only option is business class hardware. Few leasing companies will lease consumer grade hardware. If they do allow consumer leases, it’s generally at a higher rate. This is in part due to the fact a computer meant for occasional home use won’t last for the three or five-year lease.
Update & Upgrade
Most business class hardware has the ability to be upgraded. For example, if you need a larger hard drive, you won’t need a new machine. Business class machines also have the ability to be updated. When an update, for security or other reasons, needs to happen, most business class devices have Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chips.
