Admittedly use of artificial intelligence (AI) can positively impact your business, however, it’s not perfect. There are many instances where AI comes up short or actually causes issues that cost a business money. Here are some shortcomings to be aware of before you fully adopt any AI tool or encourage its use among your staff.
AI is Only as Smart as the Data Its Given
If you’ve ever used a tool like ChatGPT you may have already experienced how an AI tool can fail to provide accurate information. The industry calls this data hallucinations. It’s where AI either utilizes inaccurate information or simply makes up facts. When you ask a chatbot “Are you sure.” It may respond with either amended information or correct itself. Either way, you may be wasting time with an AI tool that isn’t fully ready to take on the task you’re asking it to handle.
It Can Hurt Your Business’s Reputation
If your company professes it is an environmentally friendly/responsible business, using AI isn’t reinforcing that reputation. AI requires massive data centers which are often built on farm land. They also use a lot of electricity and freshwater. Also, the data centers required for the use of AI generate electronic waste. If your business is built on clean water, recycling, and other environmentally friendly stances, you may not want to incorporate AI into your business.
Artificial Intelligence Often “Steals” Intellectual Property
Depending what you’re planning to use AI for in your business, it could lead to legal risks. For example, if you’re trying to create music for advertising, the AI tool may pull some notes out of a song still protected by copywrite. If the owner hears it, they could sue. Have print ad you’re looking to run? What if the AI tool creates art out of intellectual property owned by someone else? They could sue you for damages or even for part of the profit gained from the ad. The key here is if you’re going to use AI generated images, text, video, or sound, be sure it’s free of copy infringement.
Compliance & Data Privacy Issues
If you’re using a pubic AI tool or even one with a subscription model, and you upload client information, you could be violating your client’s privacy. Every industry has different rules regarding privacy and unless you’re very careful, you could end up out of compliance with your industry and face fines or other penalties. Be sure to understand where AI can and cannot be utilized in your industry.
