Over the past few weeks we’ve been answering some of the most asked questions regarding cyber security. In our final blog of this mini-series, we’re answering some questions we get from businesses who have some cyber security tools in place, but need our help implementing better protection. You can click here for part one and click here for part two if you missed them.
How Do I Know if I’m Doing Enough to Protect My Business & Data?
Because hackers change their methods so often, businesses need multiple layers of protection. However, even businesses who think they’ve done all the right things may still have flaws in their network. The only way to know how protected you are is by hiring a company to perform a network penetration test. Your managed service provider (MSP) likely offers this service. And, to ensure you’re protected, you may want to do this a few times a year.
Are Encryption & Hashing the Same Process?
Although both encryption and hashing are cyber security tools, they aren’t exactly the same. Encryption is the process of converting something anyone can access and read into unreadable information. With the right decryption tool, that data can be converted back into something readable. Hashing, however, turns the data into unreadable information and there is no way to convert it back. Both are essential to many businesses, but have different purposes.
What is a VPN and Do I Need One?
A VPN is a virtual private network. In simplest of terms, it’s a secure and encrypted connection to the internet. This protects your IP address and hides your location and data especially when using a public Wi-Fi connection (like at libraries, airports and coffee bars). Having a VPN is an added level of security for your business. Although not every business needs this added layer, any company who has staff who work remotely or travel, should have a VPN.
How Much Do All These Cyber Security Tools Cost?
There is no single answer to this question. Depending on your business, network and what services you provide, you should budget between 4% and 10% of your annual budget on cyber security tools and services. When you work with an MSP, they can help you find the right tools, especially if you have industry requirements or need cybersecurity insurance.
